Pedestrian Tunnel Under Kearns Boulevard Closed for Summer in Preparation for Next School Year

Crews are repairing the tunnel’s snowmelt system

Park City, Utah – Local construction crews have begun work on the pedestrian tunnel under SR-248 near Park City High School to replace a non-functioning snowmelt system. Beginning tomorrow, the tunnel will close for the summer as Park City Municipal undertakes critical repairs to ensure its long-term viability. The original snowmelt system failed to operate as intended due to issues during initial installation.

A new radiant heat system will be installed and encased in a fresh concrete layer, creating a safer, snow-free surface for winter use, and supporting a reliable connection between the school district campus and surrounding neighborhoods.

“This is an important step to protect the tunnel’s integrity and ensure taxpayers receive long-term value from their investment,” said City Engineer John Robertson. “We recognize the closure is an inconvenience and regret that the temporary disruption is necessary. Our top priority is maintaining public safety throughout construction while preserving long-term access for area residents — especially students and families who rely on this crossing daily to get to and from school and after-school activities.”

The tunnel will remain closed for the duration of the project. A temporary pedestrian-activated HAWK (High-Intensity Activated Crosswalk) signal has been installed to provide a clearly marked, signal-controlled path for pedestrians and cyclists to safely cross Kearns Boulevard while tunnel access is restricted.

Construction is being led by a different contractor than the original installation — Cal Wadsworth Construction. Repairs are expected to be completed before students return in the fall.
