Park City, Rocky Mountain Power to Begin Transmission Line Undergrounding
Park City, Utah — Park City Municipal and Rocky Mountain Power will begin the first phase of a transmission line undergrounding on April 7. The project, approved by City Council in 2024, involves undergrounding high-voltage transmission lines that currently run overhead through the Bonanza Park area.
Work begins on Kearns Boulevard and continues through mid-May. Drivers should expect lane reductions and detours during this period.
From April 7 to 12, westbound traffic on Kearns Boulevard will be diverted at Bonanza Drive. From April 13 to 17, eastbound traffic will be diverted at Park Avenue. From April 20 through May 15, Kearns Boulevard (between Park Avenue and Bonanza Drive) will carry one lane of traffic in each direction from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Repaving on Kearns Boulevard is scheduled May 18-22.
Work will shift to Woodbine Way in July, with substation work continuing through August and September. Phase I is scheduled to be completed in October 2026. Phase II, which will bring the new underground lines into service and remove the existing towers and overhead lines, is expected to be completed in late spring 2027.
Access to businesses, including the Snow Creek shopping center, will remain open at all times.
“This is an important long-term investment in Park City's infrastructure, and we know the work this spring will require some patience from drivers and neighbors,” said John Robertson, City Engineer. “Short-term disruptions are expected, but the benefits will be felt for years to come. We're committed to keeping the community informed every step of the way, and we appreciate everyone's flexibility this season.”
Undergrounding the lines will add available cemetery plots, reduce wildfire risk, eliminate transmission towers from the area's view corridor, and remove a 60-foot aerial restriction that has limited redevelopment options on the Bonanza Park 5-Acre Site.
